Luht / (Flood) Meadow
2026
Screen print
Duo exhibition with Juulia A Mikson at Gü Gallery, Ars Art Factory, 6.10–24.10.2026.
The joint exhibition focuses on the familiar landscape of Matsalu, a place known to both artists. Together, they observe the quiet movement of nature, which at first glance may appear to be a state of stillness. A flower grows in a flowerbed, junipers spread along the edge of a floodplain meadow, and a cloud lingers in the sky. Visible movement seems to have come to a halt, as the stillness of summer settles in.
Both Varik and Mikson work with the medium of screen printing. They depict nature as a marker of time and space, weaving together the local lore of the Matsalu region as it has been passed down through generations. The environment from which we emerge and into which we eventually disappear remains unchanged only for a moment, until a ray of sunlight flashes from behind the clouds and the Earth becomes something else once again.
The relief-like images, created on both clay and paper, refer to forms characteristic of Matsalu, such as its clay-rich soil and windswept open fields, where cloudscapes are in constant flux. On the one hand, the surroundings are undergoing continuous transformation; on the other, they may seem uneventful to the human observer. In such a place, adaptation begins only when the viewer merges with the environment and learns to sense its natural rhythm.
